Hey, I would suggest using lead-free solder and lead-free components. This would give your kit the "green label". I dont want the sample if you this suggestion doesnt value add to your project good luck

I have some finished boards that I have concluded have "black pad" defect. Outside of the black crap on some of the solder joints, if the boards are electrically functional, are they reliable? Any opinions would be appreciated as I dont want to throw

As we recall, they attached something like a placement vib head to the rails. The problem, as you stated, was isolating the board from the vibrating rails during cooling of the solder connection.
