Stencil life

Apr 19, 2018 | Stencil life Hello experts, what would you recommend as a standard practice for stencil replacement? I am having here a stencil from 2004 that is worn out enough and has a small dent on the image, but still have to prove why I want to change it.

Stencil-less printing?

Mar 1, 2018 | Stencil-less printing? That's the crux of it. We have volume and prototype lines & use a lot of stencils, so would be better for us just to get a stencil cutting machine for a similar price. However if we just did low volume /prototypes then we could make a case for it.

Stencil-less printing?

Feb 27, 2018 | Stencil-less printing? A stencil prints thousands of apertures in one squeegee stroke. Stencils can be bought for less than 200.00 Even in a prototyping application I cannot see where a machine like that could be cost effective.

QFN84 Solder Printing Issue (QFN with Inner LGA Pad)

Dec 1, 2017 | EMIL, The first stencil was with 4 squares. then there was a worse percentage. Changed to the circles. Is better, but still not perfect. Stencil thickness did not change. I added 2 types of stencil openings. Pictures of watch:

Modems reflow mistake

Oct 12, 2015 | dc5818634be31bf34b7985a8d9/1444660296/148587/872954/GL868_5.jpg" target="_blank"> There is no any system (any sequence) in the placement of this unsoldered pins. Stencil was made from 0.12 mm stainless steel foil, apertures and pads are made 1:1. Solder paste is fresh EP256HAK (high activity no-clean solder paste by Kester, Sn63Pb37). Can someone explain it (why sometimes some pins are unsoldered) and, second, is this are flaw or not? I haven't X-Ray inspection to check solder joint inside. Thank you

SMT Stencil market

Jul 9, 2015 | SMT Stencil market I am looking for the market size for the SMT stencil business in USA. Question: What is the market size for Stainless Steel(PHD vs FG), Nickle, Efab and Nano type stencils in American Continent, in USD. If someone has a reference to see I would like that as well.

Nov 21, 2014 | stencil Use nano-coating and your stencil will last a-hunnit-fiddy-million cycles. Yessur.... In reality I cant say that I have ever seen a worn out stencil. Damaged and dinged, but never worn out.

Step Stencils

Jul 25, 2014 | Step Stencils Hello all, what is your opinion on step stencils. Is it better to have the step on the squeegee side or on the bottom side of the stencil? Why you do it this way? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Stencil Inspection

Mar 17, 2011 | Stencil Inspection We inspect incoming stencils to see if they are labelled properly and sometimes check the width of special apertures and that's about it. We want to kick it up a notch. What are others out there doing to inpect incoming stencils? Is there criteria or guideline that would help us?

Humidity question

Oct 15, 2008 | No, there have been very few rework issues. We use 0603 passives, a few SOICs and a couple of 48-pin QFN packages. The boards are 4-layer, densely populated and 6-mil traces. We also thru-hole reflow 9 TO-251 packages on the bottom and a 3.5mm pitch terminal block on top. We use AIM no-clean lead -free paste with a manual stenciler. We have 3 Juki KE-750 machines and a Manncorp CR-5000F 10-zone (5 up, 5 down) zone oven. The equipment runs only our product, about 60,000 units a year; we don't job-shop. The thru-hole reflow solder joints are near perfect as are the SMT joints, even on the 0.5mm QFN

Fill a stencil openings with what?!

Oct 7, 2008 | Fill a stencil openings with what?! We use high temp (K&pton) tape on the bottom side of the stencil. This works well for us as an interim fix prior to replacing the stencil. I'd be interested to know if there are permanent methods of filling the apertures that can be done in-house.

Stencil Design Question

Feb 14, 2008 | Stencil Design Question What Steve posted is what I was picturing. I think that the stencil would certainly not be as strong due to the surrounding apertures, but stencils can be replaced. Hopefully the assembly volume will allow for replacements as necessary due to the peculiar demands being put on production.

BGA Tilt

Feb 9, 2007 | size? Most board houses will cheat on pad openings. If not check your Gerber to be sure you are asking for same size on all pads. Next, check your part. Missing balls can cause tilt. Check your balls for coplanarity (on the BGA, not your pants). Now check your stencil. All ball apertures the same? If so check for clogging. This is prolly the #1 reason for BGA defects (I know, I know, everyone blames the oven but the LAST process isn't always the PROBLEM process). Check your print next. Getting a clean wipe? Is the print crisp? Got a way to measure it? If not check printer

Lead free rework of BGA

Jan 17, 2007 | are as follows: Ramp Up: 20 Celsius - 140 Celsius @ 2.5 C/secdond Soak: 140C - 170C for 75 seconds Ramp Up: 170C-220C @ 2 C/second Time above 217C: 100 seconds Peak Temp: 245C Time Between: 230C- 245C = 60 seconds After a component is removed, residual solder is cleaned off the pads on a board. Solder paste (lead free) is then transfered to the board using a mini stencil. Component is aligned using the optics of a rework station and installed. After the board cools it is tested however, have yet to see one functional . . . tried on 4 different boards. Even tried rework on functional boards . . . ended

Can UP 2000 printer work with R and L justified stencils?

Jul 31, 2006 | Can UP 2000 printer work with R and L justified stencils? I think he meant stencils where the print pattern is front, left, or right justified on the stencil itself as opposed to being centerred. Is that what you meant. It can be done on DEK printers, but it has been several years that I worked with an MPM.

Can UP 2000 printer work with R and L justified stencils?

Jul 31, 2006 | Can UP 2000 printer work with R and L justified stencils? Yes. I have both R-L and L-R machine in house and we swap stencils betweeen them all the time. Stencil programs from R-L to a L-R machine (and vise/versa) will not.

Water Soluble vs. No Clean

May 6, 2006 | Water Soluble vs. No Clean We too use both Water soluble and No-clean in our shop. I can tell you that we have won 6 different contracts from other local contract house because our boards "look pretty". It's amazing how some customers judge how other houses build their boards. We are just about to convert our whole shop over to the water soluable process. The no clean is just too much of a mess to work with. If you operators have any touch-up on a no-clean board they will most likly have to add additional flux. This additional flux looks like crap! If you have the operators clean this extra flux from the PCB

Microscreen stencils

Nov 28, 2005 | Microscreen stencils Seor Tech We use stencils from other suppliers. So, we have no specific problems from Microscreen. Generalizing, most stencil manufacturers recommend that their product not be exposed to temperatures in excess of 110*F (43*C). Our old buddy B Scheibner has posted several times on the topic.

Microscreen stencils

Nov 26, 2005 | Microscreen stencils Dude - one thing you may want to look at is the detergent your adding to your stencil wash. If it's geared for epoxy removal, it will also remove "that" epoxy as well. The rule of thumb is, under one year, the manufacturer fixes the stencil, over one year, you pay for it.

Microscreen stencils

Nov 18, 2005 | Microscreen stencils We seem to be having a problem with our stencils delaminating from the emulsion quite frequently. Does anyone else out there that buys stencils from Microscreen have this problem ?

Cleaning Reworked BGA's.

Aug 5, 2005 | Cleaning Reworked BGA's. Hi Sandy, Here are some suggestions for an optimum cleaning process for cleaning under BGAs if they are assembled to the board to add to the great tips Shean already listed: - Use a good saponifier w/ DI water - an effective saponifier will be able to get under the BGA and clean the area without living any residue. - Maintain a wash temperature of 140 F. - Run with lower pressures in the pre-wash and wash sections at a slower belt speed - Pre-wash and Wash pressures should be set at 35 and 30 psi top and bottom respectively, and belt speeds of 3.0 ft/min We have always found in our cleaning
