Conformal Coating BGA's

We agree that coating BGA solder balls with conformal coat is a bad idea due to differences between the z-dimension thermal expansion between the conformal coat and solder.

Whether or not conformal coating creates a reliability problem if it bridges the gap between the board and bottom of the part depends on the properties of the coating. A low modulus coating is fine, but one thats modulus increases at colder temperat

Thanks for the replies. I use a foam fluxor, so the pallet is well fluxed. This is my first expierence with this thick of a pallet. Maybe Russ has a handle on it when he says that the wave height is just too high.

I have seen the solder shoot out at least 4"-6" from both the leading and trailing edge when this happens. If the open pockets are real deep you may want to use a turbulent/chip wave for soldering, sometimes this leaves bridges however.

The area of a circle = pi * radius^2 radius = squareroot(area/pi) diameter = 2*radius Is this what you were looking for?

I'm looking to automate my PCB labeling. Anyone have any insight (especially first-hand users) into this type of system?

Try Hover-Davis. They make a feeder that most popular brands of pick and place machines can place labels from. You can purchase one that you put your own labels on or you can spend more and get the Label Generator feeder.
