We use water soluble paste, Kester R560. These units are wave soldered and cleaned in an Electrovert Aquastorm water wash with a 3% Kester saponifier solution in the first stage.

Datasheet says that post solder cleaning is required.I assume this will completely go away after cleaning. Water based water soluble fluxes often leave nasty residues.

There are solder pastes that seem to give you less voiding. Currently we are using Kester ,water soluble paste that gives us pretty good results on BGA's up to 0.5mm pitch. Stencil design was a challenge but we are getting consistent results . Here
