As printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers drive to fit more integrated

circuits and passive components into a design without increasing size or

compromising performance, laser trimming of embedded passives becomes a key

enabling technology. ESI's new system, the Model 4700, allows manufacturers

to achieve tighter tolerances and increase functionality by trimming embedding

passive components within inner layers of multi-layer PCBs. This in turn

accomplishes end-user goals of smaller, lighter and less expensive handheld

portable devices.

"With our core expertise in lasers, machine vision and parts handling, ESI

offers the industry's most advanced embedded passive laser trimming system,"

said Bruce Goldwater, Director of ESI's circuit fine tuning products.

"Embedded components give PCB manufacturers an advantage over existing

technology by freeing up precious real estate on board surfaces. ESI

continues to lead the industry by introducing technologies that give our

customers the capability to meet the most stringent PCB design requirements."

The Model 4700 trims resistors to tolerances of less than one percent in

high volume production, enabling manufacturers to readily replace surface

mount components without compromising accuracy and quality. The system

accommodates panel sizes of up to 24 inches by 30 inches, and incorporates

many features for resistor trimming that have been field proven in other

industries for over 30 years. This ground-breaking system is designed to meet

the consumer demand for increased functionality for the telecommunication and

automotive industries.
