Raytheon Becomes First To Sponsor Product Development Software At University

Nov 29, 2001

Raytheon Company's Missile Systems business unit has become the first corporate sponsor of a software grant to a university through a new program established by PTC (Nasdaq: PTMC), the product development company.

Raytheon's gift to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez will allow Professor Joseph Robinson to teach students in his Creative Design I course to use Pro/ENGINEER, PTC's leading 3D product development software. Raytheon's donation of $2,500 to cover the university's annual membership in PTC's University Plus program leveraged a software license which will be used in the Mechanical and General Engineering Departments. The value of the commercial versions of the software allotted to the university is estimated at more than $10 million.

"I wanted to teach my students to use the software that will help them achieve the greatest possible success in product development," said Robinson. "Pro/ENGINEER proficiency gives young engineers a head-start that will benefit them throughout their careers."

Angel Crespo, a mechanical engineer/designer for Stinger Weapons Systems at Raytheon Missile Systems and a 1997 graduate of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, said, "We made this donation to the University of Puerto Rico because it has trained so many young engineers who have joined Raytheon and made important contributions to our product development programs. There are benefits for everyone when they come to us already trained in using Pro/ENGINEER."

The gift is the first in PTC's innovative Corporate Donations initiative, in which the company matches universities and businesses for the benefit of students. Through the program, PTC makes available to its customers an opportunity to cover the annual membership fee for colleges to join the University Plus program. Members receive unlimited seats of Pro/ENGINEER and 55 other integrated applications, including Pro/MECHANICA, PTC's design optimization (testing) software, and Pro/DESKTOP, 3D design software that has been used effectively for teaching freshmen and sophomores.

John Stuart, senior vice president of marketing at PTC, said, "PTC is delighted to facilitate a gift that will have an impact on many young innovators and the companies that will someday employ them. This gift to the University of Puerto Rico demonstrates Raytheon's vision and commitment to education."

University Plus is designed for colleges that wish to teach PTC design solutions as part of their curriculum. After that goal is accomplished, colleges may use the unlimited seat license for clubs, design competitions, research projects and industry partnerships.

In addition, University Plus members are entitled to free training for their professors, tutorials and membership in PTC's online Education Community (www.universities.ptc.com). University Plus is part of PTC's Partnership for Innovative Learning.

PTC develops, markets and supports software solutions that help manufacturers get superior products to market before their competitors. PTC is the world's largest software company with a total commitment to product development. The company services more than 32,000 customers worldwide.

With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is a global technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, and business and special mission aircraft.
