Electronics manufacturer Surface Mount Technology Corp. announced plans Tuesday for a $2.5 million expansion

Sep 30, 2009

GRAND CHUTE, WI — Electronics manufacturer Surface Mount Technology Corp. announced plans Tuesday for a $2.5 million expansion.

The plant, at 5660 Technology Circle, has experienced a robust 36 percent increase in revenue this year due mainly to growth in its engineering division.

"That's what's driving the buildout," said Chris Sumnicht, president and chief executive officer.

In the first of the two-phase project, the company will renovate 6,000 square feet for SMT Engineering LLC, its design and product development group of SMT Corp., finishing the first quarter next year.

The second step is a 25,000-square-foot addition onto the current 36,000-square-foot facility.

Groundbreaking for the addition will occur early next spring. The project will be complete in fall.

"Through the downturn we haven't lost a customer," said Brian Lamers, vice president of finance and administration.

"We've added a lot of new business, a lot of new companies," said Sumnicht.

The company employs about 95.

The new facilities will create 30 to 40 jobs over the next three years ranging from entry-level assemblers to high-level senior electrical engineers, Sumnicht said.

The company, founded in 1997, has been at its present location near the Outagamie County Regional Airport in Greenville for six years.

The company designs, assembles and tests products for industrial controls plus military, medical and automotive markets.
