What is DC/DC converter

DC/DC Converter

DC/DC Converters produce a regulated voltage from a source that may not be well controlled to a load that may or may not be constant. This device has high-frequency power conversion circuits that use high-frequency power conversion circuits that use high-frequency switching and inductors, transformers, and capacitors to smooth out switching noise into regulated DC voltages. The closed feedback loops maintain constant voltage output even when changing input voltages and output currents. There is two variation of DC/DC Converter, Non-isolated/isolated variant, where isolation is determined by whether or not the input ground is connected to the output ground.

Types of DC/DC Converter:

  • Buck Converter
    • Steps a voltage down, produces voltage down than the input voltage
  • Buck-Boost Converter
    • Steps a voltage up/down, produces voltage equal/higher/lower than the input voltage
  • SEPIC Converter
    • Steps a voltage up or down, producing a voltage equal to or higher or lower than the input voltage. (Similar with buck-boost converter with some advantages)
  • Isolated Converter
    • Input ground and output ground are not connected
    • Can produce positive/negative voltages (how you connect output terminals)
    • Forward Converter = Isolated Buck Converter
    • Flyback = Isolated Boost Converter
