Series of IPC Data Exchange Standards Expands to Aid Companies with Environmental Compliance: Focus on Batteries and Lab Reports

Jan 24, 2012

New Committees Seek Participation from Industry at IPC APEX EXPO 2012

With the proliferation of regulations focused on materials in products, IPC is expanding its series of data exchange standards to meet the industry’s growing compliance needs. Newly formed, the IPC 2-18g Declaration of Batteries and Battery Materials and the IPC 2-18j Declaration of Chemical Analysis Lab Reports Task Groups will begin development of standards that aid in the exchange of information on batteries and lab reports, respectively. Companies throughout the electronics manufacturing supply chain are invited to attend these committees’ meetings at IPC APEX EXPO 2012, February 28-March 1, in San Diego.

IPC’s series of data exchange standards assists companies in exchanging information on the materials contained in their products. The battery declaration standard will help companies facilitate clear communication of information related to regulatory compliance and conformance with customer requirements pertaining to battery chemistry, weight and category.

We are seeing a growing need for the ability to expeditiously provide information on batteries,” says Kelly St. Andre, director of product management, PTC, and co-chair of the 2-18g task group. “This standard will provide a real benefit to the industry and we need broad industry involvement to make this effort successful and meaningful.

Issuing a similar call for participation, IPC 2-18j task group chairman, William Haas, senior manager of product environmental compliance, Seagate Technology, says “Providing testing and lab report data has become a necessary part of showing compliance with environmental regulations. Involvement by electronics companies and laboratories is critical to the success of this document which will standardize lab reports and facilitate the exchange of information contained within lab reports.

All nine of IPC’s data exchange committees will meet during IPC APEX EXPO. A complete meeting schedule is available at www.IPCAPEXEXPO.org/standards.

Free registration to attend the committee meetings at IPC APEX EXPO is available to pre-registrants at www.IPCAPEXEXPO.org/register (on-site registration is $40). The Committee Meetings package includes admission to any IPC committee meetings (except those listed as “By Invitation”), as well as free access to IPC APEX EXPO keynote sessions, NPL Process Defect Database Clinic, BUZZ Sessions, New Product Zone, all free special events, and the largest exhibition in North America for printed board design and manufacturing, electronics assembly and test.

For more information on all the activities taking place at IPC APEX EXPO, including the industry’s premier technical conference, professional development courses and executive management meetings, visit www.IPCAPEXEXPO.org.
