Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced a solution to design network-based devices for machine-to-machine (M2M) and smart energy applications with the latest release of the Mentor® Embedded Nucleus® Real Time Operating System (RTOS) platform. Embedded developers can design auto configuring network devices for environments without supporting infrastructure, such as network servers, with the addition of mDNS and DNS-Service Discovery (SD) support to the Nucleus RTOS.
Devices can connect to the network automatically without network servers or manual configuration by using the Nucleus RTOS networking middleware which manages IP address resolution, device naming, and network browsing for service discovery. By combining this new capability with the Power Management Framework and networking and security middleware in Nucleus RTOS, developers can create power-efficient applications ideal for portable smart devices.
The latest release of Nucleus also includes system trace technology and a graphical kernel configuration utility to optimize kernel builds and minimize memory footprint. Embedded developers can visualize and analyze system data for debug and performance optimization with system trace in Nucleus RTOS. By using the graphical kernel configuration utility, developers can create optimized Nucleus RTOS configurations that include only the required peripheral devices such as WiFi, USB, Networking, CAN, SPI, and I2C. With enhanced kernel awareness in Nucleus, developers can use a customizable view to display selected kernel objects and events in Sourcery™ CodeBench and monitor suspected problem areas in order to quickly understand software characteristics for problem resolution.
“Developers of smart networking-based devices and applications will benefit from the latest advancements in Nucleus and also be able to enjoy an increase in embedded development productivity,” said Scot Morrison, general manager of runtime solutions, Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division.
The Nucleus RTOS includes a fully integrated Sourcery CodeBench development environment and UI design tools.
The Mentor Graphics® Embedded Software Division enables embedded development for a variety of applications including automotive, industrial, smart energy, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Embedded developers can create systems with the latest processors and micro-controllers with commercially supported and customizable Linux® based solutions including the industry leading Sourcery™ CodeBench and Mentor Embedded Linux. For real-time control systems developers can take advantage of the small foot-print and low power capable Nucleus RTOS. For more information, visit www.mentor.com/embedded.
