Altech UEC Chooses Universal’s Genesis Platform

Feb 08, 2010

Altech UEC is a leading developer of digital technology for the International Pay-TV Industry. The company has chosen Universal Instruments’ Genesis Platform to be used in manufacturing its leading-edge Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Set Top Box (STB) products. Initial production results have shown a dramatic performance improvement from 55,000 components to 99,000 components per hour.

Altech UEC specializes in the provision of integrated solutions comprising specialized hardware supported by innovative software solutions and global logistical support services. The company is utilizing the quad-beam Genesis GC-120Q; and dual-beam GC-60D and GI-14D Platforms to comprise both their top-side and bottom-side digital set top box production lines. Because their process requirements are so diverse, flexibility was a primary consideration in choosing their assembly equipment solution. “When seeking out the right solution for our production needs, we were happy to find that Genesis could serve as a comprehensive answer to our different challenges – from New Product Introduction to high-volume production and even large board applications,” states Jannie Viljoen, Altech UEC Director of Operations. “This gives us a flexible manufacturing model that affords us unrestricted productivity and a substantial cost savings.”

While flexibility is an important asset for Genesis in this environment, the performance upgrade was immediate and considerable with a throughput improvement of 80%. Heinz Dommel, Universal Marketing Director commented, “Genesis technologies such as VRM linear motor and Lightning® Head provide the speed, accuracy and overall performance to tackle the most difficult applications”. Dommel continued, “The machine design and concept, including fewer PRESS RELEASE moving parts, reduces maintenance so our customers can maximize uptime. But most importantly, tools such as Dimensions® line software deliver traceability, feeder low warnings, off-line set ups, feeder and component reel management, and performance monitoring to form a complete solution that maximizes their productivity.”
