In the ever-changing and advancing industry of electronics, there often comes a time when specific products will become obsolete, need to be repaired to maintain a legacy system, or need to be redesigned. In certain cases, a process called reverse engineering (RE) can be used to recreate a set of usable data for a printed circuit assembly (PCA) having only the board in hand.
The process of reverse engineering can be considered in several levels, requiring different tools to enable efficient and correct data creation. Attempts have been made to realize an efficient set of tools and processes around the reverse engineering of circuit boards, and have mainly resulted in a very time intensive and manual process that results in data that is perhaps 90 percent complete and correct. In many cases, this can be enough information to repair field returns with greater success than without use of the process.
At the show, Acculogic will display its REScanTM Reverse Engineering Software for the first time. The software will aid the industry-leading double-sided flying probe system, the Flying Scorpion. Additionally, with its CAD translation tool set, XMatic, the company has eliminated the majority of the manual steps with semi-automatic steps and replaced semi-automatic steps with fully automated software processes. REScanTM will revolutionize the ability to speed through field returns with no data available and aid customers in deciding if a board is repairable, or if it needs to be replaced. The software will be available for sale to existing and new customers in the fall of 2010.
