Description:

IPC J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies Training and Certification Program

IPC J-STD-001, Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies, has emerged as the most important document for process control requirements for the electronics assembly manufacturing worldwide.

Boost understanding of soldering process control and train hands-on soldering skills

The standard describes materials, methods and acceptance criteria for producing high-quality soldered leaded and lead-free interconnections on printed circuit board assemblies. It emphasizes process control and establishes industry consensus requirements for a broad range of electronic products.
It is the document of choice for technical support of process engineering and quality assurance programs in the electronics industry.

Three different types of training are offered:

  • IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Specialist (CIS)

This training focuses on the necessary knowledge for purchasers, inspectors, operators, process engineers, test engineers, buyers, quality assurance staff and any other individual involved in the procurement, production, testing and inspection of soldered printed circuit board assemblies.

  • IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Trainer (CIT)

To perform CIS training courses, it is a prerequisite to be certified as CIT. Individuals who will have to deliver Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) training will benefit from the extra information handed to them in this training. Good candidates for CIT training are trainers, but quite often also supervisors at the engineering, manufacturing or quality assurance departments.

  • IPC J-STD-001 Certified Standards Expert (CSE)

The IPC Certified Standards Expert (CSE) is a professional specialist with in-depth knowledge of a specific IPC standard. The role of the IPC Certified Standards Expert (CSE) can vary per organisation. More information on this programme and the differences with the Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) programme can be found on the IPC website: https://www.ipc.org/ContentPage.aspx?pageid=Certified-Standards-Expert-CSE.

Training Modules
The entire document is covered in the CIT training program. The instructor will get well prepared to teach all of the CIS modules. With the CIS training program, only Module 1 is a required element. The other modules may be covered based on the specific needs of your company. Thus a CIS training can be tailored to your candidate needs.

Topics dealt with:

  • General requirements e.g. on health and safety, personnel proficiency and definitions
  • Materials, components and equipment requirements
  • General soldering and assembly requirements
  • Wires and terminal connections
  • Through-hole mounting and termination
  • Surface mounting of components
  • Cleaning process requirements, cleanliness testing
  • PCB requirements
  • Coating, encapsulation, and staking
  • Product assurance
  • Hands-on soldering tasks on wire and terminals, Through-hole technology and SMT

CIT Program extra content
To prepare CIT candidates for their future role as trainers, the CIT program includes:

  • Tips on using the standard, the lesson plan, and training materials
  • Administrative tasks for IPC certification
  • Necessary trainer skills
