On Monday, President Obama released his Fiscal Year 2016 Budget of the U.S. Government. Included in the budget is funding to expand the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) as well as a 5.5 percent increase from 2015 of $146 billion for research and development (R&D) initiatives. “IPC applauds the President for his commitment to grow advanced manufacturing and increase federal R&D investment, both of which are a critical part of IPC’s Global Policy Framework for 2015,” said John Mitchell, IPC President and CEO.

IPC – Association Connecting Electronics Industries® launched a “fast facts” survey today to assess the current state of the supply chain for military electronics suppliers and the issues surrounding the trend toward lead-free electronics. All manufacturers of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic assemblies for military or aerospace applications are invited to participate. The deadline for responses is Friday, March 27.

The Nominating and Governance Committee of the IPC Board of Directors presented six candidates for election at the IPC Annual Meeting today, held in conjunction with IPC APEX EXPO 2015 at the San Diego Convention Center. Three candidates were selected for term renewal and three were elected as first-time directors. All six Board members will serve a four-year term.

The fourth annual IPC Hand Soldering World Championship at IPC APEX EXPO® on February 26 drew eight competitors from around the world. Victors from IPC hand soldering competitions in China, Europe, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States were challenged with building a functional electronics assembly within a one-hour time limit. Completing the championship round with a nearly perfect score of 247 points out of 248, Min Seok Kim, Samsung Thales Company Limited (Korea), was crowned champion, earning him a $1,000 cash prize, a new Metcal MX5210 soldering station and bragging rights as the world's best hand solderer.
