Wavesolder PCBs encounter pinholes

Electronics Forum | Mon Jul 19 21:33:26 EDT 2004 | davef

Are you talking about small 'volcanos' that burst through PTH solder connections? If so, you have moisture outgassing through the PTH barrels: * Plating on the hole of your bare board is too thin. It should be greater than 1 thou [25um]. * Your bak

PCBA Production Manufacturing Time Control

depends on board finish and PCB substrate materials. If you were using OSP or silver finished bare boards the time to process is less than an ENIG or HASL finished. certain substrate material absorb more moisture than others or at a quicker rate. so

Mishandled OSP

Dave, By Mishandled OSP i meant that it had been touched by bare hands (including pads). Its not like I want to or I donot want to bake these boards. Its just that i want to be sure that the boards will be good to use. And I like your idea to apply

General SMT Question

In the good old days, I've made raw boards at home. Layout the design and then transfer it to a bare copper clad board. Etching it out is the fun part. I grabbed our 9x13 pyrex baking dish from the kitchen. Using metal etching dish doesn't make

Selective Soldering - Barrel Fill

Electronics Forum | Fri Oct 15 11:03:50 EDT 2010 | hegemon

Well, we got the baking part right at least. I would think that would help to rule out the barrel cracks allowing moisture escape. Plating too thin makes sense to me. In any case, do you think barrel cracking would be observable on a bare PCB?

Why delamination happens on PCBs?

Electronics Forum | Mon Jun 13 09:43:11 EDT 2011 | mosborne1

Delamination almost always is caused by moisture in the PCB. You can try to keep some of the PCBs in a dry box after recieving them. You can also slowly heat them up to bake out moisture. If you are purchasing boards form overseas form a board house

Wave Solder - solder bubbles/outgassing??

Electronics Forum | Tue Nov 21 19:23:15 EST 2006 | greg york

Had exactly the same problem the other week. Baked some boards did improve slightly but not convincingly. Washed bare PCb and found excessive HASL fluids left on board from improper rinsing and problem disapeared. Baking HASL fluid out is impossible

PCB bake

Electronics Forum | Fri Jan 18 04:45:32 EST 2002 | wbu

Ianchan, baking as being part of pre-heating is obviously sensless cause the PCB will not maintain any of that heat till soldering. Common reason for prebaking PCBs is getting the moisture out to prevent outgassing, warpage and maybe other defects.
