When you go repairing resources like one time copies of an installed OS for a machine like yours , you have to treat it like your life depended on it. So get a copy of the harddisk before you attempt to repair it no matter which methodology you use.

Check the E-stop switches are not latched in, I have noticed you get weird startup errors if they are.

I don't profess to be an expert, just I remember a few things when a ran the CP40 some years ago. Also check the PC, I remember mine had some intermittent connection issues between the cards in the ISA slots, and re-seating them sometimes helped.
