Manufacturing processes, handling and printed circuit assembly (PCA) test can put a lot of mechanical stresses on packages, causing failures. As grid array packages get larger, identifying how to set safe levels for these steps becomes more difficult. A new quantitative test methodology within IPC/JEDEC-9707, Spherical Bend Test Method for Characterization of Board Level Interconnects, lets users determine how much strain packages can take before reliability degradation.

Industry experts will shine the spotlight on recent revisions to key electronics manufacturing industry standards and guidelines during IPC’s professional development program at Electronics Midwest. On September 27 and September 29–30, half-day, in-depth workshops will address major updates to the standards that establish electronics manufacturing requirements and acceptability criteria worldwide. IPC has released the E revision of IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies. IPC's most widely-used standard, which provides visual acceptance criteria for post assembly mechanical and soldering assembly requirements, now addresses additional technologies, including flexible circuits, board in board, package on package, depanelization and additional SMT terminations.
