gold wire bonding

Electronics Forum | Thu Dec 29 03:57:16 EST 2005 | sparrow

Hello Chris, To be honest, it's hard to believe you could not bond to ENIG at all. Yes, the gold layer is thin and hard, but it just narrows the process window and does not make the bonding impossible. I say this, because we have been using TS gold w

Immersion gold and BGAs

Electronics Forum | Fri Aug 26 09:57:21 EDT 2005 | russ

The Immersion gold is not a problem with BGAs specifically but "black pad" which can be present anywhere. The unfortunate thing with BGAs is you cannot see it. Personally I hate white tin. It is okay for single sided boards running no-clean, but c

I would like to know if ENIG is widely used for the thermosonic gold wire bonding or this application is an exotic one. And I also wold like to talk to someone who uses printed circuits with ENIG finish for such an application. I do not quite underst

SMT gold plated components

Electronics Forum | Wed Aug 06 16:35:31 EDT 2003 | Carol

This is an old topic, but keeps coming up. Solderability and reliability issues with SMT gold plated terminations when used with tin/lead solder paste/hassle finish PWB. I need to know which standard (mil, IPC, J-STD??) tells you all about the probl

Re: Noclean soldering to gold

Hello Russ, I believe that the dullness in color of the solder joint is related to the gold finish on the pads. I have had done alot of thru hole soldering of gold pins as well as SMT on gold finish and have seen the condition that you are talking a

Poor reflow over gold plating

Electronics Forum | Wed Jun 29 16:25:51 EDT 2005 | mattkehoe

When discussing this with the customer he said that his vendor recommended a hard gold plating finish on the board due to the BGA. I said "hard gold"??? And he said yes, hard gold. Turns out the boards were plated with hard gold, not ENIG. Thank

In response to your questions: Is the embrittlement from excess gold in lead / tin solder connections bad? It can be vereeee bad. Does it affect all plating processes the same? Give us a break and read the SMTnet Archives, for instance: BGA prob

using gold on PCB pads

Davef is right about the amount, but why are using gold to solder too when other finishes are avaiable?

Why gold plating on PCB?

Electronics Forum | Fri Feb 28 11:02:06 EST 2020 | slthomas

I'm not 100% sure which type of gold you're asking about, but if you're talking about hard gold plating, I think the most common use is to provide a durable surface for things like membrane switch contacts because it resists abrasion and other mechan

Poor reflow over gold plating

Electronics Forum | Tue Jun 28 09:13:46 EDT 2005 | russ

It appears that the reflow profile was incorrect or the paste was in bad shape on these boards from what I can see. I personally have never seen a board finish cause this symptom.
