We are considering using gold plating on our fine pitch pcbs (as oppossed to HASL). We have heard of long term solder reliability problems with joint imbrittlment how bad is this and does it apply for all of the different plating processes the same?

In response to your questions: Is the embrittlement from excess gold in lead / tin solder connections bad? It can be vereeee bad. Does it affect all plating processes the same? Give us a break and read the SMTnet Archives, for instance: BGA prob

First published in the 2012 IPC APEX EXPO technical conference proceedings. In this paper, we report on a comprehensive study regarding the morphology evolution and voiding of SnAgCu solder joints on the central pad of two different packages – QFN and an Agilent package called TOPS – on PCBs with a Ni/Au surface finish.

A high volume manufacturer of printed circuit boards (PCBs) had attempted for many years to locate an adhesive that was robust enough to meet their manufacturing needs. This proved to be a challenge because they needed the adhesive to accommodate a wide range of different dispensing equipment and board designs. The two key performance criteria required from the adhesive were dispensability and adhesion...

– Solder bridges occur when compact soldering elements create an unwanted connection. Since components on small PCBs are often tightly grouped, it can be difficult to see potential issues in soldering without enhanced imaging
