IPC, in conjunction with ELECTROSUB 2017, conducted the IPC Hand Soldering Competition at ELECTROSUB 2017 in Budapest, Hungary. The competition in Budapest drew the highest number of professional hand soldering competitors to date in Europe of 51. Unique to ELECTROSUB 2017 was an IPC HSC competition for high school students. The 16 high school competitors were not going to be out done by their older professional competitors as they put their best soldering techniques on display vying for cash prizes for first, second and third place. Taking first place in the high school competition with a cash prize of €30 was Mate Toth, Technical High School, Komarno, Slovakia. In second place with a cash prize of €20 went to Bence Marki, Palfy Water Management Technical High School, Szolnok, Hungary. Taking third place with a cash prize of €10 was Gilles Cumin, from Lajos Bardos Elementary School, Lagymanyos, Budapest, Hungary.

In cooperation with productronica 2017, IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries® is presenting its very popular Hand Soldering Competition in Hall A1, stand 307 at this year’s event. Skilled competitors will demonstrate their soldering skills, on 14 – 16 November, as they compete for cash prizes: 1st place — €300; 2nd place — €200; 3rd place — €100. New this year, IPC will feature the World Hand Soldering Championship on 17 November, 2017, with the regional winner from productronica and competitors from around the world. The winners of the IPC HSC World Championship will receive cash awards amounting to: 1000€ to the winner, 500€ for the runner up and 300€ for third place. The awards will be presented Friday, 17 November at 14:00 in the SMT speakers corner Hall A1, stand 220.

A new study conducted by IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries® predicts that reporting requirements for conflict minerals proposed by the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) would cost the electronic interconnect industry an estimated $279 million in the first year of implementation for due diligence alone, compared to the government’s estimate of $16.5 million.

IPC, in conjunction with IFTEC, conducted the IPC Hand Soldering Competition at IFTEC in Paris because the MIDEST exhibition, originally scheduled for October 2017 was moved to 2018. The competition was fierce as 33 competitors went soldering iron to soldering iron to take the hand soldering competition crown. Taking first place with a cash prize of €300 and a JBC Soldering Station was Catherine Cardinal-Simon from Thales Microelectronic in France, who earned 443 points out of a possible 446. Cardinal–Simon will now compete at the IPC World Championship Hand Soldering Competition located this year at productronica 2017 on 17 November.

Today, IPC issued a blog post in support of the FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) provisions that would bolster the resiliency and security of the electronics manufacturing ecosystem, including printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication and printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), the green-and-gold hardwiring at the core of all electronics systems. These provisions, approved in both the U.S. House and Senate, aim to improve the security of electronics purchased by the Defense Department.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is drafting new reporting requirements on the use of conflict minerals. “These new reporting requirements could have a significant impact on the entire electronics industry supply chain, much like the lead-free requirements of RoHS,” according to Mikel Williams, chairman of the IPC Government Relations Committee and president and CEO of DDi Corp.
IPC is the trade association for the printed wiring board and electronics assembly industries.
