Phil, In the considerations you make for choosing an AOI tool, you should check what a vendor delivers today and what will it be able to deliver in the future. As the role of AOI in the SMT production line evolves from "detection" to "prevention"

Have you confirmed in an SEM that the break is in the solder and not in the termination? If not in the termination, is it in the intermetallic rather than the bulk solder? It's unusual for the break to be in the solder joint when chips are knocked

Silver Sulphide Contamination of Resistors

We still build a legacy product with a primitive backplane using silver plated fork terminals for outside world connections. After some 20 years of no problems the fork terminals on raw stock PCBs were black and almost unsolderable. Because of the

Does anyone have any experience with fired-silver/platinum/palladium lead terminations soldering. I have had issues on nickel over gold plated boards but not with HASL'd boards with tin/lead pads. Is this the norm?

Well, here I am working Saturday. Seems my production Supervisor had the nerve to get sick on an overtime weekend and, for some peculiar reason, the execs expect the numbers to be met anyway. Go figure! Let me backtrack and clarify that it was th
