We just had a similar problem with misplacement, and it turned out that the designers had not put the local fiducials in the right places. I am told that placement machines typically recalculate the component centroid to be at the center of a line b

Hi all, we are just getting into using local fiducials for BGAs. My question is, in addition to having to be on the same diagonal (opposing corners) do the fiducials have to be the exact same distance from the center of the part? I always thought yes

Is it good practice to use a PCB mechanical drill hole as local fiducial? Would it increase my placement accuracy? Or should I stick to my panel fiducials? We're using a panel with 4 boards and we're trying to reach a 50 microns accuracy.

Steve, I believe Contact Systems is the only company that uses local fids in this way. All othe machine have coordinates for the local fids. When measuring the fids it applies any error from the fid measurement to the 1 component it's linked to.

Can't explain - I don't really know how it works mathematically.

Gotcha Steve, so then in essence if you teach the skew, then the Machine "straightens" it out then right? Russ

Does anybody still use local fiducials for fine pitch parts in board design?

I have only used two global fiducials except for paneling. The only time I have ever used local fids is when I have a placement problem then I have activated the local fids for that specific part. Your best bet would be to ask Fuji America.
