Re: Soldering to thru-hole lead to ground plane without thermal relief

A few more tricks to try: - Got a hot air rework machine? You can get more controlled heat on the area and lower the risk of damage to the fab. I never got topside fillets un unrelieve ground planes until I went to convection preheat on my waves.

Re: Passive component shear Testing

Scott: Sounds like fun: Solder joint strength in pull/shear varies with lead geometry, solder volume, lead metal/metallization, and the test method. Among things, IPC-TM-650 talks to getting pads off-of boards. For instance: Method 2.4.8 is for

Without a detailed description of the suspect parts It is difficult to pin-point the exact solution to your process problem. However, whenever possible avoid non-value added additions to your current process. Here is the reality of the situation:

Aluminum Capacitor disassociated from sodler joint

I'm with Steve. Check the datasheet, and make sure that the terminations are meant for solder application, and not conductive epoxy. I had that happen a year or so ago with an MLCC. Drove us nuts for two days (not to mention the significant rework

Barbara, I worked for 5 years with advanced materials including silver filled thermoplastics and epoxies for Alphametals. There is a trend towards lead free "solder paste". Some companies are using an Indium alloy paste and others are using a "lea
