J-STD-006 lists maximum contamination levels for most solder alloys. This is the basis for purchasing solder. The SOLDER BATH contamination levels in J-STD-001 are based on decades of experience. But these contamination thresholds of various metals

| I have a layer of electroplated solder (10/90) that appeares to have some sort of contaminent on it. Water will not wet to the layer in some areas. I have tried using 10% HCl in DI as a cleaner as well as 7.5% Fluoboric acid in DI. Neither has t

What is the most popular PCB finish for lead-free soldering ? We are using ENIG and trying out Paladium-Silver. Are tin whiskers an issue for anyone ? tin whiskering becomes a big issue if you have any military company as your client. They still p

Have you checked the parts for contamination? Are the voids out of spec? IPC allows some voiding, especially with lead free solder. Component contamination can cause this to repeat, as well. Try pre-tinning the component in question, and see if s

It's possible that your lead-free solder will stick to mounting bolts more than SnPb solder. Lead-free solder has a high tin content. Tin is a very good solvent. You may need to coat the bolts with a solder mask to prevent the solder from sticking.

We're using a RC filter network that we're having solderability problems with. There are 4 RC pairs with 2 ground connections (this is a leadless component). The problem we're having is non-wetting of one of the castellations (9 of the 10 scallops

Soldering contaminated leads?

Electronics Forum | Tue Oct 05 18:05:56 EDT 2010 | jry74

I have seen an increase in components with contaminated leads, mostly SMT parts. They give us solder wetting problems and insufficient solder joints. Our practice is to not use them and return them to the manufacturer. Are these parts solderable?
