Hi Dennis The gold plating on a circuit board is present to protect the nickle plating from corrosion. The layer is so thin that as it goes into solution in the solder it constitutes only a small percentage of the total joint. It is commonly accept

In an excellent previous thread davef mentions brass should be plated prior to soldering to prevent zinc leaching from the brass. It is reported once the zinc leaches, the joint is weak. He recommends copper or nickel plating. Would silver plating w

davef, thanks for feedback. I talked with a plater who said they put copper before silver when plating brass. Would a complete stack of: Brass part, then 0.0001-0.0002" of copper, then 0.0005" of silver, then Tarniban anti oxidation. Sound reasonabl

Your plater's recommendation should work fine. Your simple copper plate will work, but you'll be stepping into fighting a copper tarnish battle. Silver over the copper is a better choice. I was thinking a silver thickness of a minimum of 3 microns

Is this a sample board that you ran without components? If so, I'd get it back to your board house, and ask them to explain to you what's happening. We never did get to a satisfactory root cause on our issue (at least, satisfactory to me). It seem

We are placing a gold plated device (LCC) to a NiAu PCB using a SnPb No-clean solder. We're noticing quite a bit of difficulty with reliable joints (intermittent connectivity) and if we have to rework a particular device, adjacent devices of this sa

I can't figure out why everyone is plating everything with gold. According to the J Standard, gold plating should be removed before soldering to the surface. The gold, when left on the surface to be soldered will contaminate the solder joint and ca
