a hot tip for bad boards

Electronics Forum | Thu Apr 11 11:24:55 EDT 2013 | markhoch

Thank you for your advice Eric. Different SMT Machine Platforms have different methods for handling these PCB Panels with bad circuits. (Commonly known as "X-outs"). Some platforms allow you to identify X-Outs simply by darkening in the first fid

The impact of course is a lot less for newer PnP, but for older machine there might be different story. What if the bad marks not being read correctly? The result would be "good" board being skipped, while "X-out" being loaded. That would waste mu

Most PNP machines and AOI machines shuld have a X out feature. For us we use to use whiteout pens to mark the badsense spot. Now atm we use white lables, becuase there is no dry time. The lables have there own issues, They cause overpasteing issues

I would assume every EMS company runs into this issue on a daily basis. Before we get to how a machine handles it, I would recomend setting up an acceptance criteria with your board supplier... if you plan on accepting them at all. (ex. No more than

Hi Brad, Being that I work for a board house here is my take on this issue. In the past it used to be 1 scrap per palt up to 10% of the total order. scrap is supposed to be sepperated to location and packaged sepertaly. Then it turned into No Scra

You would have to tell us what machine brand you are using, as everyone has his own idea how to recognize X-outs. I find the auto-recognition very time consuming ( non-productive machine time ), unless the camera could recognize an image in one shot

When I enter in the program data for a particular PCB on our Juki, I choose a board fiducial and enter its X Y location as the "bad mark position". (Although I'm not sure if your model refers to this as a "bad mark" as well.) Place a sticker over tha

Hi there, As long as there is a standard procedure (choosing a so called bad-board-sensor [BBS], machines being taught in with this option, and operators trained) the impact should not be high. True that you have to push more panels through. The t

I'm told that the Contact Systems machines we have will are set up so that if you put a sticker over the fiducial it will skip that board on the panel. I think the machine might prompt the operator that it can't find the fiducial and the operator te

Brad We agree with Rob. Even if the fab marks the fids [on both sides] to reduce component attrition, you'd be surprised in the amount of paste that 'disappears' on x-out boards. Do the numbers [follow the money].
