0402 tombstoning

Electronics Forum | Thu Apr 11 14:31:15 EDT 2002 | aaelect

We're having some problems with 0402's tombstoning. On a board with about 300 parts we're getting about 12 to 20 tombstones per board. The caps seem to do it more often than the res. The pads appear to be in accordance with IPC SM 782 amendment 1, S

Hi, What size via's are you guys seeing, as the ones in our products are incredibly tiny, and via's are very small now days. The via's on the boards we have are dramatically smaller than the pad on an 0402. Grant

I think so. My customer once assembled resistors 0402 ,by Glue+wave soldering process. But PCB must be printed soldermask bridge between 0402 SMD PADs, otherwise you would encounter short problem. Sorry I don't have any comment for recommended footp

From a manufacturing standpoint, this isn't very nice. Vias will tend to wick solder away from the pad, resulting in insuficient solder joints, which require touch-up. The amount of times any solder joint is reheated should be minimized, as extra h

I had one project with micro-vias in 0805 and larger pads, with no issues. But my most recent project had vias that were larger than the 0402 pads that the via was in. To the point that for a number of the lands, there was no visible pads (a couple

I do think that the designer goofed, and used too large vias. I believe he only used on size via on the entire board, regardless of whether it was in a pad, or out on the board. I have seen vias in pad work, though. From a manufacturing standpoint

Hi, Anybody has the experience or information of mounting the SMD 0402 on solder side of PCB by adhesive (apply by stencil printing) and then wave solder the 0402? Best regards.

0402 Adhesive Screen Printing

Is anyone out there successfully screen-printing SMD adhesive on an 0402 layout? We have successfully done 0603 and larger, but the deposition consistency on the 0402's is just not there. We don't always get enough epoxy on the board. We have tried a

Is the glue intended for printed SMD attach? 3 Are you following all the manufacturers glue shelf life recommendations? 4 Are you observing all the manufacturers glue working life guidelines? Finally, what level of skewing are we talking about?

Hi Stefano, Although your concept of Wave soldering such devices is possible, I would look at an alternate solution. An easier way would be to Reflow solder all Bottom side SMD components with solder paste, followed by wave soldering for only through
