All defect types that can not be seen from top view, meaning - any defect which is characterized by more than its top 2D appearance will be hard, if at all possible, to detect by 2D imaging system. This includes: Lifted leads / co planarity J-lead

Hi Aurther, Thanks for a prompt reply. I agree but unfortunately our AOI is 2D and misses a lot of solder defects especially on connector terminals which are surface mount. We are also dependent on operator at AOI to mark the defect if caught by AOI

Do you have in line 3D Solder Paste Inspection machines? If not the 2D inspection on the SP710 is very slow & not a patch on Hawkeye from DEK. If print time is not an issue then it doesn't matter. I have had both types of machine, and personally pre

AOI false calls with 3D AOI

Hi All, I've been told that 3D AOI machines are a solution to the false calls that you get on a 2D machine, but I don't really see how the depth information can help in eliminating false calls for unreadable markings, misregistered parts etc. For s

I agree that Dage makes some excellent 3D (CAT) systems, but in our experience a high-resolution 2D system with tilt capability is usually better-suited for inspection of solder joints. Glenn Robertson Process Sciences

That's incorrect. 3D aoi is extremely useful for determining solder flow and slope which a 2D can't do. Yes it's also great for coplanarity, tomb stoning, head and pillow and a multitude of other defects. Most 3d AOI use cad models and height measure

Be careful about used AOIs, some of the companies have truly outrageous registration fees (ten, fifteen grand) without which you can't get support or parts. 2d AOI is of pretty limited utility other than detecting a wrongly mounted reel during plac
