I will say that AOI units are not > magic boxes, you get out of them what effort you > put into them. Use them as process improvement > devices, not a magic machine to catch all your > mistakes. Mirtec's come close though, but you are right a

I am almost hesitant to mention my good fortune with our Yestech system, for fear that our advantage in the industry will be known. We have run a Yestech for about a year, the operator interface is very well organized. Data is scanned on the machin

Are there any AOI of X-ray image solutions for around $150K or less? We were looking at Photon Dynamics Combo machine, as well as interfacing X-ray with pattern rec., now up in the air. Separate systems will not work for our application. Appreciat

If your goal is to inspect solder joints then X-ray is the way to go. AOI is not effective at solder joint and is best at component inspection. Using an AXI or AOI for solder joint inspection requires a lot of engineering time. Don't know any good si

We have found a significant number of PBGA problems associated with physical deformation of the package. Deformations such as dishing (potatoe chipping) and delamination under the die (popcorning). These can be detected by x-ray by the variation patt

Keep in mind that Photon Dynamics is no longer in the X-Ray AOI business. They are no longer supporting equipment in the field. A number of their employees have formed small companies to provide support for Photon Dynamics equipment in the field.

Dont your recent findings on soldering defects point towards less need for AOI? Besides that, I imagine that with 100% control and having only good prints being processed while the bad ones getting washed and reprint you will see this magical 0%. Sh

AOI (automatic optical inspection) is not capable to detect hidden joints (BGA, J-leads,...) defects. For that you will need X-Ray (AXI = Automated X-ray Inspection). Look @ http://www.agilent.com, they have both systems. It is usual that PWB manufac

My company is also researching AOI systems and X-ray inspection equipment. Almost all of our assemblies are mixed technology, and contain considerable hand load. Is anyone out there using AOI post solderwave?

We have been looking into some sort of higher level inspection system as well. But we have been fairly well convinced that X-Ray is far better than AOI. X-Ray is not only good for BGA's, it is also good for any solder related problems. AOI can onl
