Can anyone advise the best aperture opening and stencil thickness for Nexlev connector? We are seeing high reject for open solder.

If you have room, and the aperture size will allow for it, try a 5 mil overall stencil thickness with a 1 mil step-up in the area of the BGA connector.

From J-STD-001: Components designed for pin-in-hole application and modified for butt connection attachment, or stiff-leaded dual-inline packages (e.g., alloy 42, brazed or tempered leads) may be modified for use on Class 1 and 2 products but shall n

Dave: After the stencil was made with apertures for a connector on this PCB, it was discovered that the connector would have to be handsoldered after SMT reflow. If the solder deposits are left to reflow on the pads, it makes it difficult for the o

Consider opening the stencil aperture to increase the amount of solder available to the connector leads.

Do you glue SMT parts on the bottom? If so, use your SMT glue to prevent the short. Just cut a new stencil with 0.020" wide apertures between the pads of the connector (bottom side). We do it all the time.

We are going to hand place through hole connectors by screening them top side in a double sided reflow board. I saw this done before sucessfully on a daily basis but is there anyone with a paper or specs as to what aperture size, any special pad cons

I have done experiments on small runs, with a few connectors and have had favorable results, I had apertures (oversized)made for the thru-hole connectors on our SMT stencil and hand inserted the connectors.. A few insufficient solders here and there

Also I should mention, I've ditched the formulas for getting the "optimal" solder amount after being bit by them once. Now I just design a PCB with 4-10 spots for the connector then order a stencil with a range of aperture sizes. Figure out what give

Pete, I'm wondering how much optimisation you needed (or were allowed) to do with respect to connector design. The first one we evaluated had a row of leads that I can only describe as "crescent" shaped in cross section. Impossible to get even 50%
