We are trying to solder a Surface mount relay having lead free finish on the leads. The leads are not getting soldered down during the reflow. The leads also look oxidized (failed our solderability test) but we don't have an option but to use these r

The three basic methods you can use to restore solderability on components are: * Highly active fluxes in a retinning operation. * Surface stripping chemistry and then a standard retinning operation. * Electrochemical conversion chemistry and then a

I have seen an increase in components with contaminated leads, mostly SMT parts. They give us solder wetting problems and insufficient solder joints. Our practice is to not use them and return them to the manufacturer. Are these parts solderable?

Baking of the component helps it depends on the type of contamination and how much contamination. It sounds like your purchasing is buying from brokers.

With allocation of components becoming a bigger and bigger problem, our company has had to purchase components from brokers. Because of this, I've found an increase of component contamination. What I mean is I have found problems with oxidation of th

Dave, We use water soluble flux. We currently do not do a solderability test on incoming components, I'm thinking that this is going to be a "must do" with these components. Larry

We feel that we get more than our share of crusty components, but we just smile because were so happy ["Happy, happy" as Emeril says] that we use a nice and hot, aqueous flux. What kind of flux do you use?

We test Parts and Components to IPC J-std-002/003. We also use a wetting Balance tester to determine solderability. We also test with SERA. We use ROSA to electrochemically revert the components back to their original state. Need more info ... email
