Black color solder wetting after reflow

Electronics Forum | Fri May 13 14:08:39 EDT 2011 | eezday

This appears to be black-pad and is often the result of using specs that call for gold plating that is too thick. The black pad is corrosion that is created between the gold and electroless nickel during the gold plating process. This is counter in

Improving PTH fill using select solder

I am a user of an Ersa Versaflow 3/45. I was wondering if anyone could share some process pointers. I have a 0.125" multilayer PCB that I am having problems consistently achieving 75 percent hole fill on a mini-coax connector. The coax connector ha

Re: Experience with solder stop on components?

Electronics Forum | Tue May 04 10:38:24 EDT 1999 | Dave F

| Does someone has experience with solder stop on components to avoid an Viking effect (no solder on the pad, all solder on the lead)? What kind of solder stop does work well? What is dangerous? What has to be kept in mind when using such components?

How to choose a new solder paste

Electronics Forum | Thu May 26 08:52:42 EDT 2011 | davef

Phil Zarrow wrote a useful paper that could help in evaluating paste. Here read it ... Evaluating Solder Paste Not An Option Contributed by Phil Zarrow of ITM an Independent SMT consulting firm With soldering being the dominant source of assembly

Long term effect of lead free solder on plating

Silver on your copper or brass part is a solderability protection. The silver diffuses into the solder and you solder to the base metal, either the copper or brass in your case. Soldering to copper is well known. The issues are soldering to brass

Additional to Dave F.... A potato has Iron @ 2.75mg and Magnesium @ 55mg. The leaching of these two meatls could contaminate the solder pot and taint the solder. ----------------------- Additional to my additional..THE SOLDER POT POTATO BATTERY...A p

How to improve the solder quality of QFN?

Electronics Forum | Mon Jun 27 09:38:30 EDT 2005 | Bob R.

What problems are the quality people seeing? I hope they aren't expecting a toe fillet. QFNs are typically cut from an array after plating. This leaves exposed copper on the sides of the part. We'll often see smearing from the sawing process that

Long term effect of lead free solder on plating

Electronics Forum | Mon Feb 27 06:42:37 EST 2006 | Slaine

What are the long term issues with high tin content solders on parts plated with silver over copper? Is it possible that the silver will be absorbed by the solder then over a long period of time the tin will react with the copper causing it to part

What will be the effect of additional solder paste?

Electronics Forum | Tue Apr 19 16:20:05 EDT 2016 | davef

Don't blame it on the poor paste thickness requirement [although I might go on to argue that it's could be a contributor to the issue]. Most likely you're the problem. About 70% of the time solder on gold fingers is caused by poor cleaning of screen

How to improve the solder quality of QFN?

Electronics Forum | Wed Jul 06 08:41:06 EDT 2005 | james

What I have seen too is that these parts normally come in a tube and from moving in the tube some of the copper starts to expose and solder will not adhere to these parts. Let me know if anyone else sees the same problem.
