Lead free Solder Paste & Use of nitrogen

Electronics Forum | Mon Jul 29 19:39:57 EDT 2013 | hegemon

No problem running lead free without nitrogen. Careful profiling will take care of the soldering. Cosmetically, the Nitrogen reflow is superior for lead free, and we see much better wetting, better coverage of the PWB pads, and of course the smooth

Is it possible to run Pb-Free reflow without nitrogen?

We using nitrogen only for Selective Solder machine, you don't need it for reflow oven, to improve solderability we use Vapor Fase oven.

All of our reflow is with room air, 63/37 and SAC305. I believe nitrogen will get you better looking solder joints (shiny, less grainy under magnification), but per IPC, functionality and strength I don't think there is much difference.

Nitrogen in Reflow is grossly over-rated...., in my opinion, and in the opinion of several very well known SMT Industry "God Fathers". Way too much $$$, for a slight increase in the process window. If you profile your oven specifically for your pr

Labeling of SMT solder stencils

First, for new stencil-you must ask you stencil dealer to put the markings before shipping it to you. Second, for old stencil-you buy some old angle bar or any metal plate about 1 inch by 1 inche. you engrave the markings on that plate and screw it

Stephen, What does the nurse say about lead-free? You can eat as much as you want? You don’t have to wash your hands anymore? Sorry couldn’t resist.

Are you refering to reflow soldering or wave soldering? Brian, do you have any data to support that SAC305 is more reliable than Tin-Copper-Nickel? NEMI reccomended SAC type alloys for reflow and Tin-Copper for wave. See: http://circuitsassembly.

Lead free tin copper only

You can use straight forward Tin/Copper but it flows very poorly so solderability is an issue. Dosing with Phos improves this but need to stay on top of it. We have supplied some 3.8%Ag alloys for flow they work well but you get a small 'chill point'

Cost of Leadfree Solder Bars

Fastek, I just take every opportunity to point out the nonsense of lead-free. In todays assembly environment the exempt military and hi-rel products are manufactured cheaper than lead-free consumer products. Now does this make any sense to you?
