Cleanliness Testing Samples - What to Use?

Electronics Forum | Fri Oct 08 11:51:10 EDT 2004 | blnorman

Since you are using an Ionograph you need to use IPC-TM-650 method 2.3.25, static method. The test method is free on the IPC website. You'll need to get your customer to give you an acceptable cleanliness level to test to.

Re: Criteria for the Omega Mete from Alpha Metals Inc.

Are you talking about bare board cleanliness or assembly level cleanliness? Bare board cleanliness is still primarily measured by resistivity of solvent extract (ROSE) using instruments such as Omegameters and Zero Ions. What is considered as "acce

IONIC CLEANLINESS SPEC FOR BARE PWBs

Electronics Forum | Fri Dec 06 10:16:57 EST 2002 | davef

Bare board cleanliness is still primarily measured by resistivity of solvent extract (ROSE) using instruments such as Omegameters and Zero Ions. What is considered as "acceptable" cleanliness varies between specification and from company to company.

Wayne, I think Dave and Justin are correct but I would just add my twopennworth: Your customer presumably wants to know if the end-product will be reliable? If he/she wants you to prove cleanliness, ask them for the spec they want to work to and app

Conformal Coating Issues

I'll chime in here as well. If you have adhesion problems, 90% of the time it's contamination on the substrate (soldermask, flux residues, cleaner residues, etc.). Like Dave said, omega meter is a test for gross cleanliness, and it's OK for process

Asoe, The systems you are describing are Resistivity of Solvent Extract (ROSE) Testers. These systems are available using one of two technologies, Static or Dynamic. Both systems use a calibrated test solution comprised of IPA and DI water. The t

What does 5 micrograms of chloride mean to me? * With SIR testing, you can show no detrimental leakage currents under humid conditions, no corrosion, no metal migration, which are the big factors in figuring out electrochemical reliability. People

Regarding your customer suditor, it would have been nice if you said something like ... Routinely, our testing shall be less than 1.56 microgram/cm^2 NaCl equivalent ionic or ionizable flux residue, according to TM-650, Method 2.3.35 'Detection And

Clean vs No-Clean

Another direct measurement to determine resistivity values (i.e. of remaining no-clean residues) can be performed through impedance spectroscopy. The surface resistance underneath chip resistors and capacitors can be determined to show the improveme

SIR starting point...?

Electronics Forum | Mon Oct 21 22:15:36 EDT 2002 | davef

First, SIR data is heavily dependant on the test pattern selected. Be very careful when comparing the results of resistance readings taken from different geometric patterns. Second, if yer talkin': * Bare boards, yupper. * Finished assemblies impor
