I have a similar question. What are the major differences between J-std-001 and IPC 610 class 3 ?

Can I manually tin them with solder specially the BGA's. Will that improve the solderability? What about corrosion of the copper? will it be prevented with the above process considering that after tinning of solder the solderability became acceptable

IPC Class 1, 2 & 3 do not require side fillets. I think this statement is correct. But they define what is acceptable end joint widt and side over hang. regards,

As a sidenote, if nothing of the above works, IPC 610 states that it is accetable (class 1,2,3) for solder to touch a SOT body if it is plastic.

Your IPC-610 workmanship manual will have the answer for you (I don't have the latest at my fingertips). Depends on what class you are building too, 1, 2 or 3 and the application of this connector on the product- which you must determine.

What do the heel fillets look like and what level of IPC-610 (class 1,2, or 3) are you working to? Do the joints on all 4 sides look bad or just the one side? Do other parts on the board look OK?

IPC-A-610E "Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies" addresses this specific issue as well as most others. This issue would be to what class (1, 2, or 3) your assemblies would be governed by.

We're in the high rel market and use a lot of 5 mil stencils. They give plenty of paste to meet IPC class 3 and survive over 1000 cycles of -40/+125C thermal cycle testing.

I agree with Rob. These solder connections are unacceptable. BR, davef

I also agree. Even if it did meet specs, I wouldn't let a joint like this out. Reese
