NXP QFN Solderability Wetting Problems, Kester

Electronics Forum | Thu Aug 10 07:29:43 EDT 2017 | stivais

How do you evaluate the soldering quality for those QFNs? X-Ray or AOI? For some QFNs (and other bottom termination components) it's not supposed to have solder fillets on toes. It's also noted in IPC-A-610 (Rev.F 8.3.13). Take a look at your QFN ch

IPC-A-610 interpretation of wetting angle (Chapter5)

Hello everyone, I would like to know how you interpret the wetting angle in chapter 5. What is meant with: "...solder contour extending over the edge of the solderable termination area or solder mask..." Thanks ps I know what a solder mask is.

Trying to solder on the solder destination to fill PTHs. Does any IPC standard have requirements for this?

Electronics Forum | Mon Nov 26 09:33:49 EST 2018 | charliedci

The problem you create by soldering from solder destination side (presuming you have already soldered from other side) is that you will trap air in PTH so you have virtually no continuous solder in PTH from one side to other. This will not meet IPC-A

QFN standoff, industry standard

Charliem, Thank you for the input. Following this logic, in case if there are no soldering issues, pad coverage and voiding levels are within acceptable limits and a gap between BTC and pad let us say 200um, this could be accepted, right? IPC-A-61

Steve, We are touching up 6 - 12% of all solder joints processed. We consider the solder joint to be the focal point of the SMT process. Therefore our metric is based on it. For example in a given month we... 1. Assembled 25pcs of 'A' (IPC-A-610/J

Unfortunately, what you are calling a good fillet is not a good fillet. Solder on the top of the IC lead does not help to make a good connection. The most important fillet is the one located at the heel (think of the IC lead where it meets the PCB as

Conformal Coating Discoloration

Electronics Forum | Mon Aug 29 16:21:20 EDT 2011 | rjlasko

Greetings...I have a customer that has an assembly that is conformal coated with Humiseal 1A33. This assembly has some components (resistors and FET's) that heated up during operation and has discolored the conformal coating around their location.
