As we here are realizing that the list of MSL-3 and higher is much longer than we thought: 1)Component Datasheets do not necessarily state MSL rating. 2)Component manufacturers seem to make it difficult for its users (the folks who buy their produc

MSL rating is not tied to a specific package type/size. I have seen 2 components (ICs) have the same physical package but one was MSL-3 while the other was MSL-5. From my experience, while component manufacturers are not consistent as to where they

Rich: Now thats a great question!!! Youre corrrect. Primary-side temperature is the driver of the differences in the sensitivity to moisture between SMT and PTH devices that youre finding. * Primary-side temperature for SMT ~= Secondary-side te

is it necessary to vacuum seal moisture sensitive components? Or can we just seal with desiccant in proper bags?

Depends on the MSL(Moisture sensitivity level) and how far you will use them in production. Here you should be able to get all the answers: http://www.jedec.org/sites/default/files/docs/jstd033b01.pdf

"...air evacuation is not required (Figure 3-5). Light air evacuation may be used to reduce the packaging bulk and enhance carton packing (Figure 3-6). Full evacuation shall not be used as it will impede desiccant and HIC performance and possibly lea
