When soldering a metalized germanimum window to a nickle plated kovar part, I would like to understand the intermetalic. Does the nickle plate actually melt or will the solder(SN63)simple stick to the nickle and not cause nickle to reflow? Any one ou

You should to be soldering to the nickel. The intermetallic is Ni3Sn4. "At relatively low temperatures, the tin-nickel layers form about as rapidly as the tin-copper layers do, but at higher temperatures their growth rate is distinctly lower. At 10

Hi, Can anyone help explain the benefits/disadvantages of bareboard pcb baking, as part of the pre-heat conditioning, before the bareboard pcb use in SMT production run? The pcb board is 200mm x 240mm panelized pcb board, and has 28 smaller pcb boa

Hi mate, we had a crap experience (once...no more...) with gold plated over nickle (Au/Ni) PCB that had nickle contaminents in the PCB supplier's gold bath. the Ni caused batch-delivery of the PCB to us for mass production, to exhibit the visible s

hello! need ur inputs... if the Matte Sn pbfree finish of the component discolors AFTER having been exposed to bake, or, after reflow, will the base leadframe have any potential contribution to it? i know most likely suspects would be the plating pro

Please: * Describe the color and texture of the dry solder connection on the board. * Tell us the thickness of the gold and nickle plating on the board pads. * Inform us about the width and scope of the problem.

I wonder if yor customer means wrong "flux"? Your not solderng to gold. Your soldering to Nickle. The gold is disolved and dispersed. Your joint strength comes from the SnNi intermetalic.

| Does anyone know if I will have problems soldering surface mount components to an all hard gold plated PC board. We want to use hard gold similar to gold used for edge fingers because our customer is concerned about wear and conductivity of connect

Amazing in today's technology that people still bake because "that's the way we've alawys done it". Baking is a band aid for poor manufacturing of the PCB. Moisture can become trapped between the layers during buildup. This moisture when it contacts

Silver Immersion Finish - Moisture bake out guideline?

Electronics Forum | Mon Apr 26 14:40:07 EDT 2010 | blnorman

We had one product that used immersion silver plating. There were a couple of instances where we saw tarnishing, and elemental analysis confirmed the presence of sulfur. These boards did have the anti-tarnish sheets between boards, but somehow they
