Info on OSP PCBs

Electronics Forum | Fri Jun 01 01:07:13 EDT 2001 | Brian Sloth Bentzen

I would be very interested in informations on OSP (organic solderability protection) on PCBs. Good or bad experience with solderability, storage etc. There must be different types / brands of OSP. What type should be prefered ? And if possible

I've done minimal research to this point and > understand my issue with solder on the double > sided boards is due to oxidation that occures on > the unpopulated pads when the board makes its > first trip through the reflow oven. > > We did run

Washing OSP PCB's

Electronics Forum | Wed Oct 13 15:09:55 EDT 2021 | dingerusaf

What is the proper storage and shelf life after washing a PCB with an OSP finish? We sometimes have to pull the boards off the line and wash the solder paste off the boards.

OSP and getting full pad wetting??

Methods that can reduce the wettability of OSP: * Previous heat cycles * Previous cleaning cycles * IPC-1601 "Printed Board Handling and Storage Guidelines" says do not bake prior to soldering * Using improper handling methods BR ... davef

PCB SHELF LIFE AFTER FIRST REFLOW

If solderability is the only concern, then there is no standard time. Multiple factors involving OSP thickness, Flux activation levels, profile parameters, storage environment will drive the problem. You just need to perform tests to determine your m

OSP Handling

Tina, I agree with Dave 100%, I also work at a contract house and the first thing we do is tell our customers our concerns with OSP. Usually what happens is we build the first lot with OSP since they are usually built already and all subsequent lots

What is the best way to remove OSP coatings.

Here are some options for removing OSP coatings from pads of the BGA substrates. * Leave the substrates in storage for 13-14 months. Shelf life of OSP coating is ~12 months, depending on the product. * Wash the substrates in your aqueous washer. Ea

Partially completed PCBA Storage

If you haven't opened the boards yet, don't. OSP is the least expensive finish and as flat as any. BUT there is a reason most places don't use it. It does not store at all well. If you want any flexibility regarding storage of pcbs then go with ENIG.

Types of OSP Coating

We expect to see a copper shadow along the edge of pads when soldering boards with organic solderability protection [OSP]. IPC-A-610 has defined this as acceptable for years. During early reflow stages, the flux in paste dissolves the OSP where ther

OSP PCB Shelf life and part packs

Electronics Forum | Wed Sep 26 10:05:41 EDT 2012 | testbloke

Although we do not have any soldering issues with our OSP PCB's, I am trying to establish clear rules with regards pcb storage and shelf life. Our PCB's are supplied in metalised moisture barrier bags but without desicant, our current rules as follow
