Could be lots of things. With limited information about temperatures, solder alloy, and cleaning; we'll swing for the fence that you got these solder connections very hot. So hot that Pb oxide is dominating the solder joint surface instead of the

Hi Ralf, This discoloration may be re-oxidation. Fluxes are supposed to do three things (1) remove oxide, (2) promote wetting, and (3) protect surface from reoxidation. The solder paste possibly is not protecting from reoxidation. Best Regards, St

Plating houses seem to exhibit various results. Unacceptable Ni oxidation levels appear to be related to poor Pd plating processes. Ni oxidation can occur at 3 process stages: 1) prior to the Pd being applied (Ni already oxidized) 2) during the p

Like has been said, I would expect N2 to provide for shinier joints. On the other issue, which is it...O2 or compressed air? I would expect air to do nothing, and O2 might actually make your joints oxidize faster (duller appearance)...or blow up yo

Wayne; Several things. 1.check the vendors and see what black oxide they are using are they the same ? It might be that. 2.You should bake your pcbs before the thermal stress is applied. To remove moisture. At your shop. The proce

Hi John - send me an email (david.hillman@collins.com) and I can send you a few photos of what Mike K. was describing in terms of the solder joint surface being "etched" by the cleaning solution. The dull appearance is due to the abundance of lead o

Hi Steve, Thanks. This from the trusted supplier. HASL finished PCB. Even PCB supplier is using the water wash flux for fabrication. Its almost eliminated with N2 environment. And we had got a expert view from Dr. Lee of Indium on the issue st

I recently encountered reflow soldering defects on a pair diode package, the smd pad had a green contamination, I'm convinced that this is not oxidation. The no-solder condition appears to be caused by a sloppy soldermask process, although over the y

Maintenance, solder type, and tinning flux chemistries are going to have an impact on nozzle life. Doing regular maintenance and using a good quality nozzle you should expect your nozzles to last 6-8 weeks when running a single shift operation. Keep
