For flatness - Put the part on a leveling plate and roll a dial indicator across it. The leveling plate is not required for a true flatness check but using this will also work for parallelism of lead base to top of body.

I does depend on the level of technology of the PCB. RoHS-HASL for basic products and Silver Immersion for a flat finish, are my preferred.

Hi Dave, Immersion Ag has poor surface appearances after reflow or rather tarnished, while Immersion Tin requries higher temp. Probably that's why Immersion Ag is more preferred.
