Check the pick position of the component from the feeder, the feeder advancement speed, the type of feeder tape, static interference, and the cavity tolerance or slope of the carrier tape.

We have the possibility to buy a used Zevatech FS710 pick&place machine with vision. I've read that these machines used to be very well built but I'm wondering if it's capable to place 0603 parts accurately since it lacks a laser-type alignment AFAIK

I would expect any half decent machine to place 0603 parts slap bang on target to the typical defined accuracy for such parts on most machines of perhaps ~60 microns or better. Self correction during reflow is IMHO much less pronounced with lead-free
