I am surprise that you get 99.5% pick-up rate out from the HS-50, unless you are refering to 0201 chip size. I can easily get 99.8% for 0603 and 99.6% for 0402 out from a Panasonic MV2F, and these machines have no adaptive pick-up. To get 99.8% from

Our experience has been similar to yours. Not the best placements rates for 0603 caps. I can't tell you an exact reject rate on our machines. We program them as leaded components which seems to help a lot. Also, not using gang picks is best. You

Yes, but you can expect a 20%+ pickup failure rate. Chuck-based alignment was so 1990's.... :)

Could also be the leads catching on the feeder or tray during pick-up. I just had a feeder catching the edge of a lead as the part was picked causing the part to shift and be rejected at severe rates.
