Sure, to be a true lead free enviroment all components need to be lead free or fall within the specifications of lead free as defined by the RoHS Directive. What I am doing is starting stage 1 of our journey. Layed out it looks some thing like this.

Thanks Dave, From what I remember a lot of components went away from Silver Palladium to "base metal" terminations because of the difficulties in continuation of supply & stability of price. (Something about being mined in Chechnia or the Congo?) W

Mat, Are you sure you should be using SnPb HASL boards if you are doing prep for lead free? If you aren't actually going to comply with RoHS then fire away. Nearly all of our assemblies are now ENIG and as any re-design comes up on a HASL board it is

Hi, On a semi related front, part of our company is a distributor (I'm not going to say who, coz that would be sneaky advertising), and on all components shipped we've added the follwing to the label: ROHS Compliancy Status(Lead free & plastics etc

Rob We agree with Jason's point about swab lead indicators. You need to be careful interpreting the results. Lead must be in sufficient measurable quantities as found in Sn 63/37 or Sn 60/40 solders. Handheld units are: * Oxford (bought the X-Met

If you are using fine lines and tight spacing ENIG may be cheaper than HASL. This is because there is not as much bridging at the board house between traces so they do less touch up. This would probably be even more true with no-lead. We have been us

Does the pcba:s comes directly from the assembly line, You are going to do rework on? If faulty pcba:s comes back from, let say a customer from outside or the pcba:s has been on Your shelf for some days/weeks, exposed to open environment (humidity in

Ok Josh if you insist, The directive is under ongoing review and deadlines are pushed further and further. Here's a link to a proposal of 18 new exemptions. http://www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/weee/RoHS_Regs_Draft_Guidance_August_2005.pdf If you l

Reflow and wave flow solders have to be changed more often because of contamination. Pb free PCB's don't solder as well so you will likely have to find a new process or supplier. The higher temperatures heat soak the components so they all need to be
