SMT device shelf Life

Electronics Forum | Wed Jun 25 11:53:01 EDT 2003 | gmurray

Does anyone have a listing of recommended usage requirements on SMT components. Can you use SMT resistors which are over 3 years old for example ? Can you use ICs which are not known to be moisture sensitive but which are over 5 years old.

Palladium silver surface finish

May I ask what component types you are using and who the suppliers are? FYI - If the components have exceeded their shelf life, they may have oxidized too much for soldering using low activity fluxes. Thanks and best regards, SR

Use of solder paste after taking out from cold storage

Electronics Forum | Thu Oct 27 08:38:04 EDT 2005 | jdengler

Simply leave the paste out at the end of the shift for the next days use. Keeping the paste refrigerated just prolongs the shelf life. Even if you are at the expiration date leaving the paste out for 36 hrs won't make any difference. Jerry

Unforunately, the only one who can give you that answer is the manufacturer. They are the only ones who know what is in their paste and how it reacts to different situations and conditions.

Immersion Tin

Electronics Forum | Tue May 02 14:27:43 EDT 2006 | bhall

In the past we have used immersion tin as an alternative for HASL. Our biggest problem was shelf life. The tin oxidized very rapidly. We switched to immersion gold and have had great success.

Carbon Ink vs Immersion Gold for key pads.

Hi Patrick, Thank you for the info, We like to push ENIG, for us being the ENIG line is in house it is cheaper to use than the carbon, plus shelf life of the Carbon is an issue in Storage. Pre-application. Thanks again, Mike
