| Looking for anyone who has experience with high temperature soldering. Need to determine why solder joints are failing. Thermocycling of unit is -40C to +140C, 30 minute dwell time, 10 sec. transition time | Your help is appreciated | Ed Holton |

I concur with your second approach. A profile needs to be tailored to the design of the board, the components, and the solder paste. Your first approach seems to try to balance lower quality soldering with a lower process complexity.

EC - I hope you don't mind that I add to your question... We are running lead free assemblies now and parts that normally hang on upside down are falling off. Any advice on this from others new to lead free?

Hi EC, there was an in depth post dealing with this back in 2000 from the now legendary Bob Willis: http://www.smtnet.com//forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=1468Message6342 Cheers, Rob.

Different points on the board couple have different thermal masses. Look here: http://www.ecd.com/portals/5/products/vmole/V-MOLE-Verify-3-Thermocouple.pdf

Gawd. Sure FR-4 will meet those conditions. Tg [check the fine SMTnet Archives for discussion on Tg] of FR-4 is 130F or so. Consider: * Is the delT between Tg and the upper operating [or storage] temperature acceptable for your application? * D

use a solder join temperature of 200/210 whatever the pcb used (tin lead coated or osp or gold fash). 2nd ==> to adapt the temerature to the pcb used: - Reflow (200-210) for tin lead coated pcb's (in this case we have just to reflow the solder

Soldering Bath - When we need to tin high-power contacts or a lot of wires, for example, in making harnesses, a regular soldering iron is either impossible to use due to the high thermal capacitance requirement, or takes way too long to perform the t
