Hi everyone, Is there any instrument that you are using to measure the tensile strenght of a solder joint?. I would like to measure that from smd and thru hole parts. I just want to take a few samples to verify the mechanical properties. Thanks

Our company (Process Sciences) can provide solder joint testing service. If you are interested in this option please contact me. Glenn Robertson glennr@process-sciences.com

The president of my former place of employment used a screw driver for his solder joint quality assessment. I recommend you keep yours calibrated and locked up, just to be safe.

That's a great idea. You don't even need a capacitor as a fulcrum. Crikey, you are one wise dude.

These test are largely useless. Check the fine SMTnet Archives for previous rants. Manufacturers of machines to use are: * Peel tests: Instron [Instron Worldwide Headquarters; 825 University Ave, Norwood, MA 02062-2643; 800 877 6674 http://www.inst

Hello all, After lead-free reflow process of single side assembled PCB I have a problem with a tensile strenght of SMT transformers - I can rip the parts from the board very easily. There is very good component leads wetting (optical inspection)

Are the leads actually pulling off the pads or are the pads coming up as well? Did you ever try this "experiment" before you used lead-free?

Can you describe "easy"? Is it a flick of the finger, do you need tweezers? Remember, the solder is just there to provide an electrical connection, the physical attachment is a bonus! "Give me a big enough lever, and I can lift the world." --Archi
