Looking for studies that relate smt reliability against workmanship standards. For example does J-STD 001 level 3 indicate a high rel level than level 1. Thanks

IPC J-STD-001 does not allow solder inspection to be combined with coating inspection for classes 2 and 3.

You can inspect joints using an X-ray machine and we use a sand-blaster type machine which blasts (Starch) to remove the conformal coating. (Carbo Blast). However; the inspection should be done prior to Coating, as we all know some jobs are rushed t

inspect => conformal coat ... and standards are aligned with that philosophy. I can imagine doing a good job inspecting assembly after being coated with particular coating thickness, optical properties, lighting conditions. Ultra-thins are so thin

Hi Scott,Thank you for the response. I was also thinking the same that the assembly will no longer be Class III. Thanks again.

I have asked that same question to a co-chair of the J-STD-001 committee who in turn checked with personnel at IPC. The answer I received is that yes you can apply the Class 3 assembly requirements using a class 2 PWB but the resultant assembly will

Susan, If you are not doing design then your warranty must state that it's only for "workmanship". This excludes failures resulting from design or materials. In the event of an issue concerning product failure in the field have an independant labora
