Programs have been developed to predict the expected yield of flip chip assemblies, based on substrate design and the statistics of actual manufactured boards, as well as placement machine accuracy, variations in bump sizes, and possible substrate warpage. These predictions and the trends they reveal can be used to direct changes in design so that defect levels will fall below the acceptable limits. Shapes of joints are calculated analytically, or when this is not possible, numerically by means of a public domain program called Surface Evolver. The method is illustrated with an example involving the substrate for a flip chip BGA.

A great deal of controversy continues to surround the use of Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL) in the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The financial burden, technological limitations and environmental issues surrounding the HASL process continue to grow. This requires an in-depth review by the printed circuit board manufacturing plant, as well as the assembly operation and instrument designers ( OEMs), to determine what alternative surface finishes are appropriate.

Package on Packages (PoP) find use in applications that require high performance with increased memory density. One of the greatest benefits of PoP technology is the elimination of the expensive and challenging task of routing high-speed memory lines from under the processor chip out to memory chip in separate packages. Instead, the memory sits on top of the processor and the connections are automatically made during assembly. For this reason PoP technology has gained wide acceptance in cell phones and other mobile applications. PoP technology can be assembled using one-pass and two-pass assembly processes. In the one-pass technique the processor is first mounted to the board, the memory is mounted to the processor and the finished board is then run through the reflow oven in a single pass. The two-pass technique has an intermediate step in which the memory is first mounted onto the processor.
