Solder Paste for BGA Rework | Multiple Methods for Applying Paste Flux

Technical Library | 2017-03-30 18:34:52.0

There are multiple methods, each with its associated benefits for given applications, for printing either solder paste or paste flux for BGA rework. Each of these methods is best-suited for a given situation, board layout and skill level of operators performing the BGA rework. This discussion will layout the various methods and present the specific circumstances for which the specific technique is most wellsuited. In addition, the pluses and minuses for each of the approaches will be discussed in detail.

Tin Whiskering on PCBA Capacitors in Storage (Inside ESD Bag, Inside a Sealed Cardboard Box)

Technical Library | 2011-01-13 17:37:55.0

The tin whisker failures investigated in this paper were found on functional RoHS-compliant hardware. The samples were not conformal coated. This paper will document the conditions associated with the whisker formation under the following conditions; tin

Extending Soldering Iron Tip Life

Technical Library | 1999-05-09 13:05:12.0

This Technical Note discusses the construction of solder tips, the various failure modes associated with tip plating (cracking, wear, corrosion, and dewetting), how to diagnose those failure modes, and specific practices that can be taken to minimize or eliminate each one.

Strategies To Mitigate The Tin Whisker Phenomenon

Technical Library | 2023-02-13 19:04:25.0

The tin whisker phenomenon is a failure mode associated with all electronic devices that use a number of low melting point elements (e.g., Sn, Cd, In) in operations such as soldering. Recognized many years ago, the problem was minimized by adding lead, now identified as a hazardous substance and banned

Governing Autonomous Vehicles: Emerging Responses For Safety, Liability, Privacy, Cybersecurity, And Industry Risks

Technical Library | 2022-01-12 19:21:29.0

The benefits of autonomous vehicles (AVs) are widely acknowledged, but there are concerns about the extent of these benefits and AV risks and unintended consequences. In this article, we first examine AVs and different categories of the technological risks associated with them. We then explore strategies that can be adopted to address these risks, and explore emerging responses by governments for addressing AV risks.

Considerations for High Speed PCB Track Design in 10Gb/s Serial Data Transmission

Technical Library | 2009-12-09 19:28:28.0

A fundamental evaluation of a variety of approaches for designing a high-speed (10 Gb/s) serial differential electrical channel is examined. The application of the electrical interface has been simulated using HSpice software. It demonstrated how the signal quality could be affected by the use of microstrip versus stripline traces and their associated advantages and disadvantages is discussed. Example XFI channels were assembled from the simulation results to demonstrate viability of the application.

The Application of Spherical Bend Testing to Predict Safe Working Manufacturing Process Strains

Technical Library | 2013-01-09 18:31:54.0

The increased temperatures associated with lead free processes have produced significant challenges for PWB laminates. Newly developed laminates have different curing processes, are commonly filled with ceramic particles or micro-clays and can have higher Tg values. These changes designed to reduce Z-axis expansion and improve the materials resistance to thermal excursions through primary attach and rework operations have also produced harder resin systems with reduced fracture toughness.
